Monteverdi at 450: Experiments in Sound, Image, and Movement

With a concert, two discussions, and an exhibition of materials related to Luciano Berio's “revisitation” of Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea, a collection now held at the Paul Sacher Foundation (Basel), these two days of events explore Monteverdi’s impact on the music and ideas of the 20th and 21st centuries, and how his work stimulated artists in a range of media—particularly Luciano Berio (1925–2003). For the inauguration of the Berio exhibition from the Sacher Foundation, speakers include: Mauro Calcagno (UPenn), Giuseppe Gerbino (Columbia U.), Christoph Neidhöfer (McGill U.), Thomas Peattie (U. of Mississippi; Academy Fellow)

The first showing of previously unexplored archival documents related to Berio's 2003 unfinished “re-visitation” of Monteverdi’s 1643 opera L’incoronazione di Poppea for the Los Angeles opera, preserved at the Sacher Foundation
Exhibition run: Dec 7 – Feb 1 (Weekdays, 9:30 am – 4:30 pm);
closed Dec 23 – Jan 4; also closed Jan 15

To consider revisitations of Monteverdi by Romeo Castellucci, Ingmar Bergman, and Donya Feuer, speakers include: Mark Franko (Temple U.), Piersandra Di Matteo (Fine Arts Academy, Bologna); with video interventions by Castellucci and sound artist Scott Gibbons

 

TENET will perform works by Monteverdi, and soprano Lucy Shelton will perform a work by Luciano Berio, along with a short dance film collaboration by Ingmar Bergman and Donya Feuer
