Roberto Aloisio is a professor of theoretical astroparticle physics at the Gran Sasso Science Institute (GSSI), an international PhD school and research center in L’Aquila (Italy), where he has served as the director of the Physics Department since 2022.
Aloisio’s research primarily focuses on theoretical and phenomenological investigations at the intersection of particle physics, astrophysics, and cosmology. His research interests encompass the origin and propagation of cosmic rays, gamma rays, and neutrinos at high and ultra-high energies, the potential emissions emanating from the annihilation or decay of dark matter, and, in general, particle physics processes within the realm of astrophysics and cosmology. Furthermore, he has contributed to the phenomenology of theories with broken Lorentz invariance and the associated potential quantum gravity regime.
Over the past decade, Aloisio has expanded his research to include experimental activities aimed at detecting ultra-high energy cosmic rays and high-energy neutrinos through their secondary radiative emissions in the atmosphere. Along this line of research, Aloisio is a member of the international collaborations Auger, POEMMA, JEM-EUSO, and NUSES, where he serves as the principal investigator of the Terzina Cherenkov Telescope onboard the NUSES spacecraft, a satellite pathfinder for the development of novel particle detection technologies from space, planned for launch in the fall of 2027.
Within his experimental activity, RA serves as the scientific coordinator for the SEIC laboratories, a newly established space-grade facility spearheaded by GSSI with the participation of several industrial partners, dedicated to the fabrication, assembly, and testing of mechanical and electronic components tailored for scientific space missions.
